70s style shoot

Here are a couple shots from a shoot for a student doing fashion, i wasnt massively keen on the whole thing but these two came out ok, i dropped a new background into one of them, i think i have done an ok job at cutting out the subject

Tuesday

Food still lifes

Here are the two images i constructed whilst on my work placement, i used a 5x4 camera with a sinar back and a live view image, it was a different way of shooting because the lighting set ups are completely different to what i am used to, it involved bouncing light off many bits of card onto the still life which was kept inside lots of reflective bounce boards

treehouse image

I had a flash kit out so what better to do then to take phots of some mates messing around in a tree house, it was just for abit of a laugh but it turned out quite well, it ended up up looking like some sort of zombie hut.

Patricia and Ken

i went and took photos of my nan and her partner, i decided to use just natural light and see what sort of angles i could create, im quite happy with some of them and they show some moments that i didnt really intend to get.

5x4 portraits

Here are the 5x4 portraits i did using the schoeller way of lighting, they have so much more depth to them then the digital ones, these negatives were unfortunately crossed processed in the C41 machine rather than the tranny machine, i do really like the outcomes anyway, the colour cast dos bring another dynamic to the image. The short depth of field look is one i really like to try and do because it gives you more of a focal point. I want to carry on using this lighting because it really shows the face for what it is. I am going to buy some 10x8 negs mostly because i want to see the detail they can achieve and also to say that i have used them.

Martin Schoeller inspired portraits

I saw this photo of Arnie taken by Martin Schoeller, i thought the lighting looked liked something different to what i have seen before. We found the lighting set up on a video on youtube and had a go ourselves. Schoeller uses a 10x8 camera, we didnt have any 10x8 negatives so we used 5x4, i havnt yet had them developed so i edited some of the digital ones that i did. I think the results were good but i am hoping for more with the 5x4 negs

another Town Crier

This is alistair who was probably one of the best people to work with because he did most of the talking and just gave me a tour of dorchester which was actually quite interesting, seriously. This was shot on 120 film and converted to black and white after, i selected the background and dodge it to give it this effect,m then i burned bits back in to give it a bit more contrast. Although i wasn't really happy with the whole project i did get a few images like this which i am really pleased with. I quite like how it is cropped and having a path going away from you always works.

James Murphy- Fine Food Photographer

I have managed to get a weeks work placement with james murphy. I have never thought about doing this sort of photography but the more i thought about it the more i started to realise that there is a large demand for this because not many people choose to do it, and even more it is a hard skill to get right because we all know what food looks like and getting it to look extra special can be quite challenging, so many potential clients need food photography and if they find someone they like then they will stay with them for a long time. Places such as supermarkets(waitrose, sainsburys, etc), hotels, Restaurants, cookbooks( because we all now how popular chefs are and the amount them that are around and they are always bring out new books so if you managed to do one of them then that client would get you to do many jobs for them. I am looking forward to this week because it will be a new skill that i would have that not many others will ever even think about. The top image is from rick steins cook book.

Sony Project

Here is one of the final images for my sony project, i am actually quite pleased with it because of my novice ability with photoshop, i feel that i am able to work thinks out in a constructive manner without the aid of a tutor watching everything i do. I shot this in such a way that i would easily be able to put it together, although there was still an awful lot of techniques needed to get it done. I like the fact that you cant read that it says sony right away so it gives the viewer a chance to guess it themselves and this gives then a sense of achievement. The images in this project are stronger because they are more of a demonstration of what i like doing, and i want my work to head this way fro now on, i need to move away from so much and focus more attention on my advertising and set up images.

Pancake race

Here are some amusing images i too at a pancake race in wimborne, it just goes to show the lengths villages will go to keep tradition whatever the weather or event. About 300 people turne out to run around a church tossing pancakes. absolutely insane.

JOHN WRIGHT-Internship

Here is photographer John Wright who is the main photographer for Q magazine and has taken photos of everyone from michael jackson to pete Doherty, but he is by no means confined to musicians, he pretty much photographs whoever is the biggest news at the time. I have applied for an internship because works experience with a photographer at this level is so valuable and the connections i would make will help me to get my foot into the door of the industry.

He was one of the last photographers given time with michael jackson to shoot him.

Here's how photographer John Wright remembers it.

"I got a call saying Michael Jackson was in London and I could shoot him. I never thought for a second it would come off, so I was surprised when he did turn up at the office where we were doing the shoot. He looked exactly like you'd expect Michael Jackson to look: hair weave, military jacket, shades on inside.

"He was wearing a lot of make-up and he didn't have the healthiest skin that I've ever seen.

"He seemed fairly comfortable in front of the camera, though he wasn't jumping through hoops. I got a minute-and-a-half to shoot him, which is no time at all.

"My abiding memory is how polite he was - forgetting everything that's gone on, if you were his parents, you'd be proud of how you'd brought him up."

He is obviously trusted in the celebrity area because most photographers are out to ruin them, he makes them look good in the eyes of the public, all of his images are well photoshopped and use alot of sharpening which really gives viewers an impression of openness.

Town crier and toastmaster series

Here are the final images i used for my CAP project. I am not as happy of them as i thought id be because of the amount of effort i put into it, i dont really think they show how much work went into them. Meeting all of these interesting individuals was an experience and they really sre a nice bunch of people who on the whole dont mind being photographed, it is in there nature to perform and that is exactly what they did. Each person was a different challenge because i had not met them before. I decided to shoot them all on medium format and only using natural light because of laura pannacks talk. It was a personal thing to do this but if i had to re-shoot it i would use flash because your are always comfortable in the fact that you will get a good shot whatever the conditions you are working with. If i have learned anything then it is that i want to steer my photography more towards advertising because coming up with concepts and reacting to a product gets my motivation going more. On the whole the series is mixed with some of the images being stronger then others, and the fact that i had to sacrifice better images because they did not fit in with the series even thought they were more successful.
